Russia has unleashed a full-scale military invasion of its neighbour, Ukraine. It is the biggest assault on a European country since the Second World War.

The attack, while unprovoked, did not come as a complete surprise. Russia invaded Ukraine eight years ago, seizing the Crimea, a peninsula on the Black Sea. It also fueled and armed a separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine that has killed 14,000 people since 2014.
