On the night of September 10, Storm Daniel hit the coast of Libya. It caused huge storm surges and massive flooding in the northeastern part of the country.

The coastal city of Derna was hardest hit. More than 4000 people were killed. At least 9000 more are still missing.

The World Health Organization called it a “calamity of epic proportions.” It was the deadliest storm to hit Africa in recorded history.
