War has broken out in the Middle East. On one side of the conflict is Israel. On the other is Hamas, the political and military group controlling the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian territory bordering Israel.

Death and destruction

Hamas launched a brutal surprise attack on October 7. It fired 5000 rockets into Israel. Fighters crashed through the border and attacked towns in southern Israel. They killed hundreds of civilians and soldiers and took at least 150 hostages.

It was the deadliest attack against Israel in decades.
