There is a mountain in Mumbai, India called Deonar. But this mountain isn’t made of rock. It’s made of 16 million tonnes of trash.

Deonar is almost a hundred years old. It towers 18 stories high and covers as much land as 227 football fields.

A growing problem

Deonar is India’s largest trash mountain. But it’s only one of 3184 giant trash piles that contain 800 million tonnes of garbage in total – about the weight of five million blue whales.

And these mountains get bigger every year.
