Flags were lowered to half mast in September across the United Kingdom, Canada, and many other Commonwealth nations to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen died September 8 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She was 96.

Queen Elizabeth was Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. The country had just celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, marking the Queen’s 70th anniversary on the throne. She was the only monarch most Canadians had ever known.
