The Winnipeg Foundation received a huge gift from a local business owner. Miriam Bergen, a quiet philanthropist who died earlier this year, left the charity $500 million in her will. It’s the biggest donation ever made to a Canadian charity by an individual.

The Winnipeg Foundation, founded in 1921, is the oldest community charitable foundation in Canada. In its 100-year history, it has granted $780 million to local charities and nonprofits. Last year, it gave $84.9 million dollars to 1100 charitable organizations in Winnipeg.
