Governor General Mary Simon hosts a roundtable discussion at Rideau Hall in honour of International Women’s Day. (Sgt Mathieu St-Amour, Rideau Hall)

Governor General Mary Simon closed comments on her social media accounts in February. The decision was prompted by the increase in abusive, misogynistic, and racist insults and the growing number of violent threats.

Ms. Simon was distressed and stunned by the malicious personal attacks on her identity as a woman and her Inuit heritage. She was also concerned about the mental health toll on her social media team, whose job it was to wade through the stream of vitriol and hate.

Now she’s pushing back.
